Box Score

COLLEGEVILLE, PA - The #15 Johns Hopkins baseball team combined for 30 hits in two games to sweep a doubleheader at Ursinus on Saturday afternoon. The Blue Jays (22-4, 10-1 CC) captured game-one by a 5-2 score and completed the sweep with an 11-4 victory in the nightcap.

Hopkins got things going in the first inning of game-one with back-to-back singles. After Ursinus got the first out of the inning, senior third baseman Todd Emr (Westwood, NJ/Saddle River Day) lifted a sacrifice fly to left to plate the first run.

The Blue Jays added to their lead with two more runs in the top of the fourth inning. Senior left fielder Jon Solomon (Fairfax, VA/Riverdale Baptist) lifted his second home run of the year to right field in the inning.

Ursinus struck back for a single run in the bottom of the frame to make it a 3-1 game. The Blue Jays however got that run back in the top of the fifth. Ursinus made it a 4-2 game with a run in the bottom of the sixth.

The Blue Jays got their final run of the contest in the top of the seventh as junior first baseman Ryan Biner (Crystal Lake, IL/Prairie Ridge) wrapped out an RBI single.

Junior right hander Chez Angeloni (Jenkintown, PA/La Salle University HS) picked up his fourth win of the season in game-one. Angeloni threw 5.1 innings while surrendering two runs and striking out two. Sophomore Matt Wiegand (San Diego, CA/La Jolla) closed it out for the Blue Jays with 1.2 innings of scoreless action for his first career save. Zack Engle took the loss as he threw a complete game.

It was much of the same in game-two as Hopkins once again put runs on the board in the first inning. Emr cracked a two-out two-run home run to right field to give the Blue Jays the early lead.

The Blue Jays took a 4-0 lead with two more runs in the third inning before Ursinus made it a 4-3 game by putting three on the board in its half of the inning.

Hopkins put three runs on the board in the seventh inning as senior center fielder Rob Pietroforte (Brooklyn, NY/Berkeley Carroll) had an RBI single in the inning to score two and later crossed the plate on wild pitch.

The Blue Jays capped their scoring with four runs in the top of the eight inning. Emr knocked his second home run of the game, sophomore right fielder Brian Youchak (Pittsburgh, PA/Vincentian Academy) had a two-run single and Pietroforte knocked a sacrifice fly.

Senior right hander Pat Steffee (Wentzville, MO/Marquette) picked up his first win of the season after throwing five innings of relief and surrendering just one run. The loss went to Luis Serrano, who surrendered four runs in five innings.

Emr finished 5-for-7 with three runs scored and four RBIs. He had the two home runs, a double and a sacrifice fly. Pietroforte was 4-for-7 with three runs scored and four RBIs, to go along with two stolen bases, two doubles and a sacrifice fly. Youchak had a 5-for-8 with four runs scored and two RBIs performance at the plate.

Hopkins puts its five-game win streak on the line on Tuesday when it hosts Dickinson College. First pitch of the Centennial Conference contest is set for 3:30 p.m.
