Duddie and Offense Lifts #15 Hopkins to 13-2 Win Over Dickinson
April 15, 2008
BALTIMORE, MD - Senior right hander Brian Duddie (San Diego, CA/Mt. Carmel) allowed just two runs in seven innings to help lift the #15 Johns Hopkins baseball team to a 13-2 win over Dickinson on Tuesday afternoon in Centennial play. The Blue Jays (23-4, 11-1 CC) won their sixth straight contest after getting home runs from sophomore Brian Youchak (Pittsburgh, PA/Vincentian Academy) and senior Nate Adelman (Redwood City, CA/Menlo School).
After Duddie sat the Red Devils down in the top of the first inning, the Blue Jay offense got things started in the bottom of the first. After a leadoff single, Youchak knocked his fourth home run of the year over the right field fence to give Hopkins the 2-0 lead. The Blue Jays then loaded the bases for junior first baseman Ryan Biner (Crystal Lake, IL/Prairie Ridge) who lifted a sacrifice fly to left to score the third run of the inning. Sophomore second baseman Lee Bolyard (Burke, VA/Lake Braddock) capped the scoring in the frame with an RBI groundout.
Dickinson got one of those runs back as Nicholas Perkins led off the top half of the second with a home run to left field.
Duddie did not allow more than one base runner in the third through fifth innings as he had four strikeouts during that stretch.
Hopkins broke the game open with six runs in the fifth inning as the Blue Jays sent 10 men to the plate in the frame. The first two Blue Jay batters of the inning reached before the Red Devils got the first out. Biner then recorded his second RBI of the game with a single down the left field line. Senior DH Matt Benchener (Newtown, PA/Holy Ghost Prep) had an RBI single in the inning as did senior left fielder Jon Solomon (Fairfax, VA/Riverdale Baptist) and Youchak. The final two runs of the inning scored on a passed ball.
An RBI double by Evan Hennessy in the sixth got the Red Devils another run and made it a 10-2 game.
Hopkins capped its scoring with three runs in the seventh. After the first two batters of the inning reached base, Adelman drove a ball over the left field fence for the first home run of his career.
Duddie threw seven strong innings to pick up his fourth win of the season for the Blue Jays. He scattered seven hits and two runs over that stretch while walking one and striking out nine. Junior Pete Smith (Reston, VA/SciTech) and senior Paul Martone (Toms River, NJ/Toms River South) threw the final two innings for the Blue Jays allowing just one hit over that stretch.
Zach Light took the loss for Dickinson after surrendering ten runs in 4.2 innings of work.
Youchak finished the game 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a run scored while Biner went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored. Bolyard was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI as Solomon also had the same line.
Hopkins is right back at it as the Blue Jays host Washington College tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. This game was originally scheduled for April 4 but had been postponed due to rain.
