Box Score

BOYERTOWN, PA - The Johns Hopkins baseball team got nine dominating innings from junior Brian Duddie and defeated Gwynedd-Mercy, 3-1 in 10 innings on Friday night in NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional action. The Blue Jays (38-10) advance to the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship against Kean University on Saturday.

Gwynedd-Mercy got on the board in the first as the Griffins reached Duddie for one run. Mark Mattes reached on a walk, stole second and came home on a ground out from Anthony Capella.

The score remained 1-0 in favor of the Griffins for the next six innings as both starting pitchers were dominating play. Duddie had eight of his 10 strikeouts on the night through the first seven innings. Ryan McNamara was also having success on the mound as well as he kept the Blue Jays without a hit in the game till the fifth inning.

The Blue Jays got on the board in the eighth inning with the tying run. Junior third baseman Nate Adelman led off the inning with a single and was advanced to second on junior left fielder Jon Solomon's sacrifice bunt. After junior shortstop Jonas Fester was hit by a pitch, senior catcher Rob Sanzillo hit a fielder's choice. Gwynedd-Mercy's second baseman made a throwing error on the play allowing Adelman to come home with the tying run.

Both pitchers continued to control the game and the game headed for extra innings. In the top of the 10th, junior first baseman Matt Benchener singled through the left side and was sacrificed to second on a bunt from Adelman. Solomon then laced a single through the left side to score Benchener with the go-ahead run. The Blue Jays would then load the bases and a get a sacrifice fly from junior center fielder Rob Pietroforte for a second run in the inning.

In the bottom of the 10th, Duddie allowed a leadoff walk and was replaced on the hill by junior Joe Zaccaria. Zaccaria struck out the first two batters he faced. After allowing a single to center, Zaccaria got a fly ball to right, that senior right fielder Brett Izzo came down with to secure the victory.

Duddie improved to 3-0 on the year after going nine innings, allowing one first inning run, four hits, two walks and striking out 10. Zaccaria picked up his first save of the year, with his one inning of work. Capella, who started the game in right before moving to the hill, took the loss for the Griffins.

Benchener was the only Blue Jay with multiple hits on the game; he was 2-for-3 with a run scored. Solomon went 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Adelman was 1-for-3 with a run scored while Pietroforte was 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Hopkins will return to action tomorrow, May 19th at 12 noon versus Kean with the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Title on the line. The Blue Jays need to take two from the Cougars to capture the championship.
