Week In Review

• Hopkins had just one game last week as it traveled to Mary Washington on Wednesday. The Blue Jays trailed 5-2 heading to the top of the seventh but put four runs on the board and came away with a 7-6 victory.

• Senior right fielder Brett Izzo had an RBI single to score two in the game while junior third baseman Nate Adelman went 2-for-2 with a double and a triple. Freshman Greg Harbeck got the win after throwing an inning of relief ball. Fellow freshman Marco Simmons got the save after throwing two innings and getting a nice double play from Rob Pietroforte and Rob Sanzillo.

The Week Ahead

• Hopkins is headed to the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regionals set to begin on Wednesday in Boyertown, PA. The Blue Jays are part of a seven-team field that includes #1 seed Kean University, #2 TCNJ, #4 Gwynedd-Mercy, #5 Frostburg State, #6 Elizabethtown and #7 Wilkes.

• Hopkins will take on Elizabethtown on Wednesday at 1 p.m. in the battle of the Blue Jays. Hopkins leads the all-time series with Elizabethtown, 9-6. Depending on the outcome of Wednesday's game, Hopkins will then take on either TCNJ or Wilkes on Thursday.
 

 

Team/Individual Notes

• The Blue Jays will be making their 14th appearance overall in the NCAA Tournament and 13th appearance under head coach Bob Babb. Hopkins is 18-25 in the NCAA Tournament under Babb including a trip to the College World Series in 1989.

• Senior catcher Rob Sanzillo needs three more RBIs to become the 13th person at JHU to have 100 career hits, 100 career runs scored and 100 career RBIs.

• Junior shortstop Jonas Fester needs three more doubles to the tie the NCAA single season doubles record, he currently has 24.

• The Blue Jays have out scored their opponents this year, 427-218. In the first inning, Hopkins is out scoring its opponents 66-25. The Blue Jays are 26-2 when scoring in the first inning.

• Juniors Ryan Kuhlman and Joe Zaccaria give the Blue Jays a solid option on the hill as the pair has accounted for 15 wins this year in 21 starts.

• Juniors Rob Pietroforte and Jonas Fester were named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District II Team. Both players will now advance to the national ballot. This is the second year Pietroforte has earned all-district honors and the first for Fester.

• Junior left fielder Jon Solomon is on a 10-game hit streak, he needs to hit in two more games to match his long for the season at 12 games. The longest hit-streak by a Blue Jay this season belongs to Rob Sanzillo who hit in 17 straight games earlier this season.

• Senior right fielder Brett Izzo has certainly moved around in the Blue Jay line-up this season. Izzo has hit in every spot in the line-up with the exception of the third and fourth spots. Hopkins is 26-8 this year with Izzo in the starting line-up.

Ryan Kuhlman has registered 55 strikeouts this year on the mound. Of those 55 strikeouts, Kuhlman has caught 28 of them looking.

• Junior center fielder Rob Pietroforte tied the JHU single-season record for triples this season, he needs just two more triples to tie the JHU career record for triples at 13.

• Of the 53 teams in the NCAA Tournament, Hopkins ranks among the top in wins this season. Wooster has 40 wins this year while St. Scholastica has 36. Hopkins is tied with five other teams who have all achieved 35 wins this season.

• Senior closer Brian DeLeo has registered a team-best four saves this year, bringing his career total to seven. DeLeo has also held opponents to just a .193 batting average in 14.2 innings of work.

• Senior second baseman Ian Christie, on a nine game hit streak, has 17 multi-hit games this year and 10 games with multi-RBIs.

• Junior DH Tony Margve recorded his 14th double of the season against Ursinus in the Centennial Conference Championship game. That more than doubles Margve's career best which had been two.

• Junior third baseman Nate Adelman has been one of the Blue Jays best pinch hitters with a .444 batting average. Adelman has also translated his success to the starting lineup as he's hitting .388 in 35 games this season.

• This year's senior class is now 135-31-2 (.809) in their four years.
